Eternal Flame Falls

Orchard Park, NY

a view of the flame of eternal flame falls

History

The Eternal Flame Falls is a small waterfall located roughly a mile and a half into the Shale Creek Preserve section of Chestnut Ridge Park located in western New York, about 25 minutes from Buffalo. What makes this waterfall special is its “eternal flame”, a mysterious firelight glowing brightly from a small grotto at its base.

The flame itself isn’t exactly eternal

The flame is fueled by escaping methane gas emerging from cracks in the rock, and from time to time becomes extinguished by the falls, only to be relit by a curious visitor.

Visiting

Chestnut Ridge Park and the Eternal Flame Trail are free to hike year-round. There is plenty of free parking large enough to accommodate RVs and plenty of other vehicles.
