Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic tourist destinations in the world. Located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, this ancient Incan city attracts millions of visitors every year who come to marvel at its stunning architecture and breathtaking views.

The history of Machu Picchu dates back to the 15th century when it was built by the Inca emperor Pachacuti as a royal estate. The city was abandoned during the Spanish conquest in the 16th century and remained hidden from the world until it was rediscovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham.

Today, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The city is known for its impressive stone structures, terraced hillsides, and intricate irrigation system that allowed the Inca people to cultivate crops in the mountains.

Visit

Visitors to Machu Picchu can explore the city on foot and marvel at the incredible engineering feats of the Inca people. One of the most popular attractions is the Intihuatana stone, which is believed to have been used as a solar clock by the Inca people.

Another popular attraction is the Huayna Picchu mountain, which offers stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains. However, only a limited number of visitors are allowed to climb Huayna Picchu each day, so it’s important to book your tickets well in advance.

In addition to its historical significance, Machu Picchu is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The surrounding mountains offer a range of hiking and trekking opportunities, including the famous Inca Trail which takes hikers on a four-day journey through the Andes Mountains to Machu Picchu.

When planning a trip to Machu Picchu, it’s important to keep in mind that the site is located at a high altitude of over 7,000 feet. Visitors should take time to acclimate to the altitude and drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.
