The Poinsett Bridge with its distinctive gothic-style arch has caught the eye of travelers through Greenville County for many years. South Carolina’s oldest bridge was constructed in 1820 and is believed to have been designed by Robert Mills, the same architect behind the Washington Monument. Though its architecture may have drawn hundreds of photographers from around the world, its haunted history has brought hundreds more paranormal investigators.
The tales of spirits enhabiting the bridge date back to its beginnings. As one story goes, a worker who had fallen ill with malaria during the bridge’s construction was entombed within and on some nights his ghost can be seen standing under the arch, another says that sometimes the ghosts of the other workers return at night to admire their work, and probably the most famous; the headless ghost of a man was shot and killed on the bridge returns when it rains at the stroke of midnight.
Aside from the more well-known hauntings, visitors often report screams and mysterious lights coming from various points around and under the bridge. Photographs of the location often appear blurred or contain orbs, and those who have dared to stay after sunset often suddenly have trouble starting their cars.
