The station has been broadcasting since 1973 and is believed to be operated by the Russian military. It is also commonly known as “The Buzzer” due to the buzzing sound it emits.

The purpose of the station is not officially known, but it is believed to be used for military communication or espionage purposes.

Over the years, there have been several instances of unusual broadcasts on UVB-76.
