History

As the story goes, Sarah Winchester, while having been haunted by the spirits of those killed with the rifle her late husband’s company invented, and under the guidance of a psychic, moved out west and bought a home with the intent to build non-stop, and build non-stop she did. By her death in 1922, the Winchester Mansion had become something of a modern marvel. What had started as an 8-room farmhouse now contained 160 rooms, 40 bedrooms, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms, 47 stairways and fireplaces, and 6 kitchens, totaling 24,000 square feet, constructed as an elaborate labyrinth to keep her paranormal tormentors at bay.
